Manchester United Survive Spirited Derby Fightback

Manchester United were cruising towards the Carling Cup final, but they were made to work hard in the end by plucky Derby County, securing a narrow aggregate victory...

As far as United's line-up is concerned, it's probably best to list the second-string starters: Foster, Rafael Da Silva, Neville, Evans, O'Shea, Nani, Gibson, Anderson, Giggs, Welbeck, Tevez.

It promised to be an interesting evening for the home faithful as they attempted to overhaul their narrow disadvantage from the first leg.

First Half

Kris Commons tormented Manchester United at Pride Park throughout the first leg, with his goal separating the sides as the second leg kicked off at Old Trafford. The Scottish international was thus full of confidence in the opening minutes, picking up Rob Hulse's pass, driving forward and flashing a fine effort wide from distance.

The Championship visitors were keen to keep the game fast and scrappy, hoping that the United second strong wouldn't be able to gel. However, a moment of magic would soon level the tie.

Nani, who's having a productive Carling Cup despite recent criticisms, picked up just inside the Derby half, surged forward with pace, cut inside and unleashed an unstoppable drive beyond Roy Carroll.

Just six minutes later, Sir Alex Ferguson's fringe players had the lead in the tie. Carlos Tevez and Danny Welbeck linked up well before John O'Shea wandered forward to finish well. The defending, however, was woeful.

The Red Devils were flying by now and it was really only a matter of time before they added another and effectively book their place in the final.

Nani's cross was tempting for Welbeck, but the youngster didn't connect cleanly on the volley, hitting the ball into the turf and allowing Carroll to make the save.

Welbeck was involved in the build-up when the third goal did come after 34 minutes. He won a corner which was rolled to Rafael by Ryan Giggs. The Brazilian crossed for Tevez, who who able to find the net with a simple header. Three and easy, as they say.

Still, it could and should have been four and easy before the interval. Rafael played a one-two with Giggs and raced through, but the sharp move was concluded by a weak finish into the side netting.

The right-back, though, wouldn't have a chance to do better as he took a knock to his knee and was replaced by Darren Fletcher.

Second Half

Derby threw on notorious hothead Robbie Savage at the break, hoping to give the side a bit of backbone. He was keen to get into United after the re-start, giving away a free-kick which Giggs tested Carroll with.

Derby did improve initially, with Paul Green's dangerous cross causing Jonny Evans to panic uncharacteristically and Neville almost turning Hulse's ball into his own net.

Green then had two good chances in five minutes, both volleying and heading over... he should have done better with both and it looked as though it wasn't going to be his night.

The order, of course, was quickly restored and Tevez had a 'goal' ruled out for offside as the hosts went for the jugular.

United were enjoying much of the possession and Fergie was keen to get his subs on: 19-year-old stopper James Chester and one Cristiano Ronaldo, on for Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs respectively.

From then on, a John O'Shea captained side should have coasted to the finish line, having been superior in every area for the bulk of the game.

Football doesn't work like that, though, and the Rams raided the penalty box as Evans struggled with an injury concern. The stopper brought down Green in the area - a certain penalty - which sub Giles Barnes was only too happy to dispatch into the roof of the net.

United tried to respond instantly as the game moved into the last ten minutes, but Carroll stood firm from Ronaldo and Nani efforts. At the other end, Savage whipped in a free-kick which Barnes headed straight into the arms of Foster.

United would seek to kill off their opponents once and for all as time started to expire and Tevez caused all the problems. He raced through and rounded Carroll - the 'keeper left with no choice but to pull him down. Ronaldo stepped up to power the spot-kick hard, low and into the net.

Yet Derby still weren't finished. They won a free-kick and, after a long injury stoppage, the impressive Barnes scored a glorious free-kick which beat the wall and dipped into Foster's bottom-right.

The only pity was that there wasn't a few more minutes for Derby. As it was, it finished 4-3 on aggregate in favour of the World Champions.

Player Ratings: Manchester United 4-2 Derby County

Despite cruising initially, the Red Devils were made to work hard in the end by plucky Derby County, eventually holding on for a 4-3 aggregate win. Goal.com rates the participants of a rip-roaring 4-2 Carling Cup second leg clash...

Manchester United

Foster: 6.5 - Had a decent game on his third appearance of the season. Beaten by a penalty and a glorious free-kick, but was generally solid behind a strange looking back-four.

R Da Silva: 5.5 - Started well enough, but took a knock to his knee and had to be replaced by Darren Fletcher just before half-time. Just before that, he should really have scored, hitting the side netting.

Neville: 6.0 - Looked a bit off the pace early on, preferring to protest instead of chasing after the ball he gave to Stewart. He also had a tug at Davies, giving away a free-kick in a dangerous position. However, playing in a central role, his experience was key at times. Lasted 67 minutes.

Evans: 5.5 - Had poise and composure until the second half, when it all went wrong. He panicked from a Paul Green cross and then was blighted by injury. Subsequently hauled down Green in the area giving away the penalty and going into the book for his efforts.

O'Shea: 7.5 - The utility man had a good game on the left. He finished well from 15 yards to put his side two up and ended up with the armband after a flurry of substitutions.

Nani: 7.5 - One of Nani's better games in a United shirt. Scored a peach of an opener, using his pace to surge forward, cut inside and unleash an unstoppable drive. Created chances thereafter, causing all kinds of problems.

Gibson: 5.5 - Lasted the full 90 minutes, but wasn't overly impressive. Slightly sloppy during the first half in particular.

Anderson: 6.5 - Was a key part of United's oft impressive passing game and did what he always does, with a minimum of fuss. However, his night had a nightmare ending: he was stretchered off in some discomfort after the final whistle.

Giggs: 6.0 - The classy veteran was involved in a lot of good attacking play. His short corner led to the third goal, he linked well with Rafael to send the youngster through minutes later and tested Carroll with a good free-kick. However, didn't last till the hour mark.

Welbeck: 6.0 - Involved in the build-up to the second and third goals and had a great chance of his own - a volley hit into the turf. The starlet faded badly after the interval, though.

Tevez: 7.5 - The lively Argentine had too much quality for Derby at times and lived up to expectations. He was involved in the second, headed in the third, had a 'goal' ruled out for offside and won the penalty which brought about the fourth.

Subs: Fletcher (6) did fine at right-back, Ronaldo (6.5) came close a couple of times before netting from the spot and young Chester (6) also got a run-out.

Derby County

Carroll: 6.5 - One of those up and down nights for the former United 'keeper. Made some great stops - a double-save from Ronaldo and Nani the highlight - but looked shaky at times and brought down Tevez to concede the penalty.

Connolly: 6.0 - Exposed by Welbeck a couple of times, but got forward well, too. Green should have netted his great cross before the Derby fight-back proper.

Albrechtsen: 5.5 - Made some good covering tackles but was, along with the entire defence, ripped apart time and again as United took a three-goal lead.

Todd: 5.5 - Blocked from Welbeck early on, but was slow at times and had to be withdrawn just after the hour mark, clearly struggling.

Stewart: 6.0 - He was aggressive early on, ratting Neville's cage. However, he didn't show enough of that fire for the duration.

Teale: 6.0 - The wide man was exposed for the second United goal, trying in vain to play an offside trap. He did, though, see a bit more of the ball towards the end of first half. Moved to the left for the second period, drifting in and out of the game generally.

Addison: 7.0 - Moved to defence midway through first half. Before that, the highly-rated player had worked hard in midfield.

Green: 7.0 - Initially his delivery wasn't there and, in the second half, he missed two great chances. However, he'd have a big impact during the exciting climax, winning the penalty which gave the Rams a lifeline.

Davies: 5.5 - Caused a lot of problems with his runs during the first half - even if his crossing was wayward - but made way for Robbie Savage at the interval.

Commons: 6.0 - Was the hero of the first leg and hit a great shot just wide early on at Old Trafford. Looked most likely to produce something until United ran riot. Another who looked to have taken a knock and was replaced with 20 minutes remaining.

Hulse: 7.0 - The big striker worked hard in the lone striker role and was involved in some good stuff. Put in one magnificent cross which tested the rearguard and can be pleased overall.

Subs: It was all about Giles Barnes (8.5), who came on to score both set-piece goals and look lively besides. Pity he's injury-plagued. Bad boy Savage (7) also had a good impact and Barazite (6) didn't do too much wrong either.
